What are Floating Acrylic Signs

We fabricate our floating acrylic sign plates from acrylic sheets; they are durable and a safe substitute for glass. Usually, they are an assembly of two plates: a rigid transparent surface plate, and an opaque substrate. They are precisely cut into different shapes. We either laser-engrave or digitally print your design directly onto their surface. Because of their versatility, the design of your acrylic sign is limited only by your creativity.

Parts of Floating Acrylic Signs

Floating acrylic sign plates are composed of:

• The surface plate: A rigid acrylic plate on which the text and logo are laser-engraved or digitally printed. Surface plates are usually transparent, but are also available in a variety of tinted and opaque colors, and can have a frosted appearance.

• Standoffs: Four stainless steel standoffs are used to fix the plate and elevate it from the wall.

• The substrate plate (required sometimes): A backing plate that acts as a colored background. It matches the shape and size of the surface plate. We fabricate it from acrylic or wood.

Installation and Standoffs

Our floating acrylic signs can be installed on any wall surface using standoffs. The standoffs fix the two plates together onto the wall and will allow the surface plate to float off the wall and produce a nice drop shadow effect.

By default, we drill holes for the standoffs in each of the four corners of the sign plate. Alternatively, you can request a custom hole placement.

Thickness

You can choose the thickness of the floating acrylic plates from 3 to 10 mm. Thicker acrylic plates offer added durability and rigidity and show greater light refraction for more sheen and dimensional depth (when backside painting or printing is used).

Shape

You can design the shape of your acrylic plate to be a square, rectangle, rounded corners, circle, oval, custom or custom with an offset around the rim of your shape. We can custom-cut any shape from acrylic sheets. Acrylic shapes can be painted, printed or laminated. This enables us to produce a unique acrylic sign that matches the shape and colors of your logo.

Colored Acrylic

Check for available colored acrylic sheets to specify the plate color of your sign. Colored acrylic sheets are available in opaque (piano-black) and translucent (tinted acrylic: blue, red, orange, etc.).

Painting

We can paint acrylic sign plates in any paint color.

Laser Engraving

Any text and graphics can be laser-engraved on the surface plate.

Our sign-plates are usually back-engraved.

Frosted artwork appears milky white. In such a case, we recommend a dark-colored substrate.

Frosted artwork can be manually color-filled.

Printing

Stunning results are obtained using digital printing on transparent acrylic material. The Printing option is great for displaying your business logo or brand.

Frontside or Backside Painting/Printing

The surface plate can be painted or printed on the frontside or backside of the surface, both of which offer different advantages. Backside painting/printing is recommended in most cases. Backside painting/printing creates depth and sheen, as well as being less likely to be scratched or damaged once installed. However, bright lights may cause some glare on backsides painted/printed signs, in this case, softer and indirect lighting may eliminate this problem, alternatively, frontside painting/printing can be used.

Frosting

Frosted acrylic diffuses light and provides a translucent background to your design.

Frosted acrylic can be combined with frontside painting/printing to create a blurring effect, displaying your logo in focus and leaving the remaining space frosted.

Frosted acrylic can be combined with backside painting/printing to create a nice effect called Crystal-Ice finish. If metallic paint or ink is used to paint or print the backside, a distinguished visual effect called Metallic-Ice finish is produced. This can be combined with laser engraving to produce a striking effect.

The substrate

We offer our floating acrylic sign plates with:

• Acrylic backing panels,

• Wooden backing panels,

• Without backing panels.

Acrylic substrates are approximately 3 mm in thickness.

Acrylic substrates are available in many colors: opaque (piano-black) and translucent (tinted acrylic: blue, red, orange, etc.). We can also paint them in any paint color.

If letters and graphics are to be laser engraved on a clear surface layer, a dark-colored substrate is recommended to contrast the frosted milky white letters produced by laser engraving.
